With this in my mind, I set mine up on a wooden table placed on our patio. It's quite sheltered, with a garden wall on two sides and a fence on the other. This keeps it away from the wind.
It would be a great idea to invest in a pizza peel. Without one, it would be almost impossible to bake a pizza in an oven. I also plan to buy another one to make it easier for me to set up a little production line. It's not necessary to cook for four people. However, if you cater to more people you might find it useful to be able prepare another pizza on the second peel.
I was able to see the directions again and realize that you need to rotate the pizza in oven after 20 or 30 seconds. This is to ensure the pizza cooks evenly. It was a simple problem and I was soon able to make delicious, beautifully cooked pizzas that were ready in 60-90 seconds. These pizzas were a huge hit with the kids.
Fyra 12 isn't the right oven for anyone who dreams of making pies at a large party. This oven is for small groups. However, even after making three or four pies, the ash buildup was so great that the oven couldn't reach 500F. The result? Pizzas that took longer and were not the right texture.
It's been used in all weathers. We've made it during glorious summer, rainy Saturday evenings and winter. Check out the story below to see how it went...
First, take off the chimney cap. Next, remove the chimney cap. Following the guidelines, I used two tablespoons of hardwood pellets to get going. The next step is to add a flame-proof firelighter to your grate. I used Ooni firelighters that we were given.
Ooni recommends that the Fyra be run at full temperature for 30 mins to remove any food.
Ooni Fyra's Ooni Fyra models also have the signature foldable legs that are found in every Ooni Oven. We love its small and portable size, which is why it's one of our favourite things. The unit measures 27.17x18.9x10.24 inches. This is a small, portable pizza oven that can be easily set up anywhere.
But the Ooni pizza oven wave has been a tough one to ignore. The Scotland-based company, which burst onto the scene with their first model in 2012, has exploded in popularity in recent years. It now offers five models that range in price from $349 to $799, from gas-powered pizza ovens like the Ooni Koda 12 to multi-fuel pizza ovens like the Karu 16 that are compatible with wood, charcoal, and propane. All are only suitable for outdoor use. From the marketing, it would seem that no matter the outdoor space you have access to (photos of fire escape pizzas and camping trip cookouts adorn their Instagram) and your comfort level with live fire cooking, there is an Ooni for you. I decided to take that bet.
If you have a large family or want to make pizza the main course of your next dinner party's menu, I recommend a gas-powered model like the Koda 12. You'll pay $50 more, and lose some of the portability that pellets offer, but it will be a lot more fun for you and your friends.
The Fyra 12 requires fuel, just like any other pizza oven. Fuel costs money. Ooni sells 20-pound bags at $25. However, there are cheaper options and any brand will work. You'll also need fire starters while you're at the store.
The Ooni Fyra can be purchased on the Ooni website (opens new tab). This is a great way to see if it's out of stock. You can also visit the Ooni section of the Lakeland website (opens new tab), where you will find a variety Ooni pizza ovens and accessories. For the latest deals, see our widget below.
Ooni Fyra 12 is also capable of cooking other foods, as long as you have oven slots that can hold your cookware. Ooni offers recipes for items such as duck breasts or banana bread. These can be cooked the same way in wood-fired ovens, rotating to face the heat source. The skillet can be used, but you will need to remove the skillet from the oven and turn the food within the pan. Ooni solves this problem by making its own cast iron skillet, which has a removable handle. I find this fussy. Also, the pan is flimsy and tiny, IMO. So I will stick with pizza.
These accessories can quickly raise the cost of your outdoor pizza oven.
Ooni Fyra 12 can be used to cook other items, provided that you have the right cookware. Ooni has recipes for duck breasts and banana bread on its website. You cook these the same way as you would in a wood-fired oven, rotating to ensure that every angle is equally exposed to the heat source. You can use a small cast-iron skillet to do this, but the handle of your skillet will stick to the oven. Ooni has a cast iron skillet with a removable handle that will allow you to rotate the food in the pan. This is too fussy. The pan is small and flimsy, IMO. I'll stick with pizza.
This Ooni Fyra model also features the trademark foldable legs found in every Ooni oven. One of our favorite things, however, as mentioned earlier, is its compact and portable nature. The unit measures 27.17 x 18.9 x 10.24 inches. It’s a fairly small pizza oven that can be set up almost anywhere, with minimal space required.
To cook with the Ooni Fyra pizza oven, you must set it up outdoors on a flat surface light the fire starter and slide the tray back into the body of the oven. This will be the base of your fire. After it’s blazing (15-ish minutes, you can peek through a peephole at the front of the oven to check), you’ll add more fuel to the pellet hopper to keep a constant flow of fuel feeding down into the fire. A hopper full of pellets lasts about 15 minutes, and you must constantly replenish it if you want the fire to stay strong. Forget about it for too long and the temperature will drop, which cannot be fixed by simply adding more pellets.
The Ooni Ovens are unique in that they have a vent at the back. This helps to collect air from the oven. It is very useful considering that the pellet hopper cannot gather enough air as it is always covered.
You will need to have a good grasp of how to do this so that you can get the pizza off the oven without any damage to your toppings. After a few practice attempts, you will soon be able to gently move the pizza off the peel.
The Ooni Fyra pre-packaged pizza oven is lightweight, so it's easy to take out in the garden.
We have also replenished wood pellets for our pizza oven and decided to use the Ooni-branded hardwood chips we were originally given as they work so well. The large bag of 10kg pellets (PS19.99), has been very reliable and cost-effective to use the oven.
Windy conditions can increase the heat time and expose pellets' biggest flaw, flame maintenance. The Fyra 12 can reach ideal temperatures for pizza making, but it won't stay there. Even in perfect conditions, it takes just a few minutes to make a Neapolitan-style pizza. The oven also requires some time for recovery between pies.
A gas-powered option, such as the Koda 12, is recommended if you have large families or plan on making pizza the centerpiece of your next meal party. Although it will cost you $50 more than pellets and may not be as portable, you will enjoy your meal and the company you have.
Assembling the Ooni Fyra pizza oven was incredibly simple. As someone who has zero patience when it comes to following assembly instructions (my Ikea flatpack meltdowns are fairly legendary in our house), this couldn’t have been more straightforward.

What does that translate into for the end user? Fyra 12 uses a lot pellets. It always needs more. It takes a lot more effort to maintain the flame needed for cooking more than one slice of pizza.
When the oven arrived at home, I prepared a batch of dough and carried it up to the roof. The rest--trials and errors, many pizzas on multiple rooftop parties and lots of compliments--is history.
Ooni recommends running the Fyra at maximum temperature for 30 minutes in order to completely clean it. This will help you burn any food leftovers.
Based on the five criteria above price, setup, design, cooking performance, and portability the Ooni Koda 16 is our top pick for outdoor pizza ovens. However, it is more expensive than the Gozney Roccbox, and you'll need to purchase a few accessories, which drives the price up further. 22 Dec 2021
The perfect natural fuel for your pellet-fueled Ooni pizza oven. Our Premium Hardwood Pellets are 100% oak, sourced directly from US forests. They light easily, burn efficiently and produce very little ash waste.
The best wood for an Ooni Oven is the cooking logs made by Smoak Firewood. All of their wood is 100% free from preservatives, kiln-dried for maximum burning, and they offer the wood in five different varieties (white/red oak, maple, hickory, and cherry).
Ooni was founded by Kristian Tapaninaho and Darina Garland, a married couple who were running an education company at the time but were frustrated that they were unable to replicate restaurant-quality pizzas in their oven at home. 1 Nov 2021
How do you clean an OONI pizza stone? Whilst you're cleaning out your pizza oven, you can clean the stone down with a sponge and soapy water. Don't forget to clean both sides and be sure to wash as much of the soap away as possible afterwards. A good old scrub works well!
Can my Ooni Pizza Oven be used indoors? No, all Ooni Pizza Ovens are designed and certified for outdoor use only. 18 Sept 2021
The Ooni Fyra pizza oven does not have a gas option, and from the sounds of it, never will have either. The Karu is incredibly versatile. You can cook on real wood, charcoal, and you can use gas with the gas burner attachment. 11 Oct 2021
